What is hacking?

Today, mainstream usage mostly refers to computer criminals, due to the mass media usage of the word since the 1980s. This includes script kiddies, people breaking into computers using programs written by others, with very little knowledge about the way they work. This usage is so much predominant in the general public that a large segment of it is unaware that different meanings also exist. While the use of the word by hobbyist hackers is acknowledged by all three kinds of hackers, and the computer security hackers accept all uses of the word, free software hackers consider the computer intrusion related usage incorrect, and refer to security breakers as "crackers" (analogous to a safecracker).

There are many different meanings of the word hacker. I feel that a hacker, is just one skilled computer user. You have different levels of hacking. The type of hacking you do is represented by the color of your hat. A big too much Wild Wild West for my taste, but thats what you get for trying to be any kind of hacker.
  • White hat - good guy
  • Grey hat - some good/some bad
  • Black hat - bad guy


The white hat hacker is a good guy. Used his/her skills to check the security on a protected system, and will also help securing the systems. This is basically the IT security guy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_hat

The grey hat hacker is one hybrid. Not really bad, but not a good guy either. The grey hacker don't usually hack for personal gain or wanting to destroy anything, but may or may not commit crimes during the search for more information about how the computer world works. This is more like doing something bad, to accomplish something good. Like hacking into some computer, and make the changes needed, so it can't be done again. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_hat

The black hat hacker is the bad guy, and also called a cracker. This is a guy who specializes in unauthorized penetration. They hack into systems for many reasons. Money, political motivations, getting "streed cred" or just for fun. These people also make viruses, worms and crack software. Cracking software can be getting the serial number, make programs run without CD. They also make programs for tricking people into giving them money. Fake virus scanning programs, movie wrappers and programs that just send them information about you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hat
